For many students it's just the end of another school year, but for me the last year has been quite a journey. I was selected as a school resource officer (SRO) and assigned to the Investigations Division of the Lodi Police Department early last year. SRO's work closely with the elementary, middle, and high schools in the Lodi Unified School District. Aside from enforcing laws in and around the school campuses, SRO's act as mentors, role models, friends and teachers.

Gangs are flat-out scary. And it is certainly not reassuring to
learn that, at least in Lodi, gangs are attracting younger and
younger members. As today's front-page package by reporter Katie
Nelson pointed out, solutions are neither swift nor simple.

Everyone is angry out there. From the guy who “salutes” you with
one finger as you both pull into the same parking stall outside of
Walmart to the parent who wants to fistfight you next to the snack
shack because his kid didn’t get to play shortstop that day;
everyone is stressed and on edge. People are worried about
everything from Libya, taxes, unemployment, the deficit, radiation,
immigration, crime, the price of a head of lettuce and a gallon of
gas, to the NFL lockout and Charlie Sheen.

city of Lodi was one of the best choices I have ever made.
