Among city of Lodi employees, 82 earned more than $100,000 in 2012 — up from 30 in 2009. City officials say the difference is in overtime hours, especially among fire and police employees, which were rare in 2007 and 2008.
“For the city, overtime is cheaper (than hiring more staff),” said Councilwoman JoAnne Mounce. “I know that it probably looks terrible to have that many people making that kind of money, but they’re putting in the hours.”

I could go on a rambling, ill-tempered rant about the shocking
lack of worthwhile films released in 2011. I could easily wallow in
righteous indignation, and throw up my hands in disgust and defeat
as I impotently curse Hollywood’s artistic bankruptcy and offer my
own theories as to why last year saw the worst theater attendance
numbers in 16 years. And I’d be right to do it. But this time of
year, I prefer to ignore the crazed, rampaging elephant in the room
and instead celebrate the few diamonds in the rough that kept me
from completely losing my mind over the course of the past 12
months. So let’s get to it:

The Arco Gas Station on Victor Road will be closed for the
foreseeable future as smoke and flames inside the station’s
mini-mart turned the manager’s office into charred remains and left
the rest of the store riddled with smoke damage.

So many parents, students and teachers turned out Wednesday for
Lodi Unified School District's Superintendent's Budget Advisory
Committee that it was shut down early by the fire department.
Battalion Chief Jeff Larson calls off the hazardous material unit, fire crews and paramedics after a call regarding students getting sick from gasoline fumes in the Industrial Arts building Thursday. Earlier in the day, a spill occurred and was cleaned up. A relative of a student called the emergency crews. Nothing was found when firefighters arrived on scene. (Jennifer M. Howell/News-Sentinel)

The longtime president of Cottage Bakery has shifted gears from
making artisan breads and cakes to focusing on his Christian
ministry. Terry Knutson, 65, resigned from the Lodi company
recently after nearly a half-century at the bakery. The south Lodi
manufacturing plant opened in 1986 and remains at its Neuharth
Drive location. The company was purchased in January by Ralcorp
Holdings of St. Louis, Mo., for more than $170 million.
