On 9/11 at about 3 a.m., I ended my all-night tour of the
Arizona-Mexico border. With a retired Border Patrol agent, I had
spent the previous evening driving from Sierra Vista along the San
Pedro River to the Naco Border Patrol Station.

Many headlines about the Supreme Court decision on Arizona S.B. 1070 indicate that the justices cut the bill back to its bare bones. In June 2010, Arizona passed legislation that allows law enforcement officers to inquire about immigration status when an individual is lawfully detained and suspected to be illegally present. But this week's news stories mislead. The law's key provision, proof of status, remains.

Promises, promises — when Congress debates immigration legislation, it promises the moon. But in the end, it delivers nothing. With today’s Gang of Eight amnesty in full-blown congressional discussions, empty vows about interior enforcement, securing the border and putting immigrants at the back of the line are distractions thrown out to appease a skeptical public.

The UC Board of Regents recently voted 7-2 to raise in-state students’ tuition which could, by 2019, climb from its current $12,192 annually to $15,564.
