Fellow officers, city staffers, district attorneys and more packed the Lodi Police Department community room Tuesday to celebrate the promotion of two officers.

The Lodi Police Department has been marked by frequent change and turnover in recent weeks. Decades more experience is leaving the department as its second-in-command, Capt. J.P. Badel, retires after 29 years in law enforcement.

David Gonzalez has grown up with the Lodi Boys and Girls Club.
He begins each day at 7 a.m. at the club, where he practices
basketball. He has made friends with the staff members and often
helps the younger children in the recreation center.

For the first time, a Lodi citizen was honored for wearing her
seatbelt at the Lodi Police Department’s yearly awards.
Lodi resident Marcella Wheat was honored along with seven
officers, staff members and volunteers. Cpl. Sierra Brucia was also
promoted to the sergeant position, and his four-year-old son Kellen
pinned the badge on his uniform.

For the second time in three years, Lodi has begun a search for
a new police chief. City Manager Rad Bartlam announced Friday that
the recruitment process for a new top cop in the department has
started, and the city is getting some outside help. Headhunting
firm Bob Murray & Associates will handle the recruitment
process, taking all applications and contacting prospective chiefs
from now until March 18.

Lodi Detective Eric Bradley received the highest public safety
award in the state Tuesday morning when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
and Attorney General Jerry Brown awarded him the Medal of Valor. He
accepted it along with nine other officers from around the state at
a ceremony in the governor's council room.
