This year’s high school freshmen were barely walking when the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers fell and a plane crashed into the Pentagon 12 years ago today. Some middle schoolers weren’t even born yet.

For those of us who grew up during the Vietnam years — and especially for those who fought in the 20-year-long war — the prospect of possible United States involvement in the Syrian civil war is chilling. In my lifetime, the U.S. has been part of at least 10 armed conflicts, some of which, like Vietnam and Somalia, were poorly thought out and even more poorly executed.

What may have started as a secular-motivated uprising for democracy in Syria has now clearly transformed into a full-blown Islamist revolution where all ethno-religious minorities are being targeted for extermination in Syria, including Muslim Kurds, Muslim Alevis and Syrian Christians (Armenian, Greek Orthodox, Assyrian, others). It is proven that these Syrian rebels are linked to al-Qaida.
