Pastor Larry Bradford had a Christmas message ready for Sunday’s service at Woodbridge Community Church, but once he heard about the mass killings in Newtown, Conn., he decided to ditch his original sermon.

While there were only three people physically at Lodi residents
Guy and Linda Marquardt's dinner table in Lodi, there was a
hodgepodge of faces smiling at them through a computer and wishing
them a happy Thanksgiving.

Holly Marquardt has been accepted for admission at Bethany
Lutheran College, a private residential liberal arts college in
Mankato, Minn. Marquardt is a senior at Luther Preparatory School.
She is the daughter of Guy and Linda Marquardt, of Lodi.

St. Mary's Church in Nottingham, England, may very well be the
home of the world's first Sunday school in 1751. The Sunday school
movement would pick up speed in the following decades, championed
by Robert Raikes, editor of the Gloucester Journal. In those days,
Sunday was the only day that poor children in the slums didn't have
to work in the factories.

Leonard Blank is a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. Y Acosta, who
co-owns the Lodi bar The Stadium with Blank, lives for the Chicago
Bears. Despite loving rival teams, the two men are best friends.
When the Packers and the Bears collided in the NFC Championship two
weeks ago, Blank came away with bragging rights. Both men, however,
came out winners as they are headed to Dallas to see the Packers
take on the Pittsburgh Steelers live and in person in Super Bowl
XLV on Sunday.

that Muslims may have the legal right to construct a community
center and mosque two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City —
but it shouldn't be built there anyway. However, the feeling wasn't
unanimous. Some are torn over the issue, looking at both sides.

Guy Marquardt, 40, became the new pastor at Christ Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Lodi's Eastside earlier this year. He replaces
Ricky Himm, who resigned almost a year ago. The church has a
congregation of what Marquardt describes as "108 souls."

Every time I see the west wall of General Mills looming large
when I'm traveling east on Tejon Street, I keep thinking what a
wonderful wall to paint a large mural on - a mural of mountains
against a blue sky with a green forest and maybe even a lake toward
the bottom of the wall, just above the rooflines of the houses
there. Any takers?
