Given my choice between watching the College or Major League World Series, I'd pick college without hesitation. Even in the opening rounds, the players are more fundamentally well-schooled in the basics: advancing the runner, hitting the cut off man and laying down a bunt. And, to be honest, if those same players put on a San Francisco Giants uniform and passed themselves off as big leaguers, few in AT&T Park's stands could tell the difference. Many of the college pitchers throw over 90 miles per hour and field their positions flawlessly.

Having spent six of his seven NFL seasons with the New York
Giants, one might assume that the Giants would be Greg Bishop’s
sentimental pick when they take on the San Francisco 49ers in
Sunday’s NFC championship game.

Sure, it's easy to rattle off a list of your favorite movies --
but what about your favorite individual scenes? This can be tricky,
because even your favorite films don't necessarily have a specific
scene that stands out above all others. And I'm not talking about
scenes you "like"; I'm talking about the scenes that make you want
to throw on a DVD at 3 a.m. when you're tired and drunk and
slovenly but can't bear the thought of going to bed before you
catch just that one scene... for the 250th time.

We’re back with a look at Robert Rodriguez’s hotly anticipated
exploitation tribute “Machete.“ Next week, we will (schedule
permitting) take a break from the reviews with a more thorough
preview of what you can expect from Battle Royale, the
News-Sentinel’s new movie blog that will expand the scope of our
film discussions with some fresh perspectives from new writers and,
hopefully, more reader interaction.

See? I don’t ask for much from movies. Give me a good time, show
me something I haven’t seen before — or even something I’ve seen a
hundred times before, provided it’s done skillfully — and I’ve no

This week we're taking a step back to take a brief look at one

we'll start in on the films of the new year, beginning with the
God-goes-nuts actioner "Legion" (if they actually make this work,
I'll be amazed) and the Gibson-goes-nuts actioner "Edge of

So, how about that game yesterday? Was it a great Super Bowl, or
what? Well, I would have been much happier if Green Bay had beaten
New York in the playoffs so Green Bay had been on the field
yesterday, but that's water under the proverbial bridge now.

When the New England Patriots and New York Giants butt heads in
Super Bowl XLII this Sunday, one of two things will happen: The
Patriots will finish the season a perfect (and unprecedented) 19-0,
or the Giants will pull off perhaps the greatest upset of all time.
The popular opinion seems to be that fans would like to see the
Giants win, but they just can't see it happening.

It's a cool Lodi evening, sometime around 10 p.m. Two seemingly
young people leave Tokay Liquors with a six pack in hand as they
suck on freshly lit cigarettes. A train is cranking past, and the
worn, rusting logos painted on boxcars are illuminated by the
signal's flashing red lights. The train's roar is violent and the
whistles blow in accordance with the dinging bells.
