Pat Derby, who founded the PAWS sanctuary for wild animals in the country outside Galt before adding two more sanctuaries, died Friday of throat cancer at her home in San Andreas. She was 69.

The Delta: On the Sacramento River, salmon anglers are using Silvertrons, Scarey Lures, Blue Foxes and Kwikfish. Best areas are the mouth of Steamboat and the Old Sac all the way up to Walnut Grove. Marty Morfey caught the winning salmon in the Rio Vista Derby at 23.10 pounds. He caught it in the Walnut Grove area on a Killer Bee lure.

It's a shame, really, that so much has been made about such a big opportunity for these elephants. Anyone and everyone who has visited the PAWS site knows the safety precautions and care they place on all animal care. I have been six times and am always amazed at the policy of "animals come first" and the enforcement of their motto.

The three elephants being moved to the Performing Animal Welfare Society's sanctuary in San Andreas will travel from the Toronto Zoo aboard a private plane thanks to longtime animal activist Bob Barker. The announcement was made Friday.
