    Emanuel Kundert joined the Navy because he liked the clothes. He also wanted to see the world, though his father didn't want to lose the help he provided on the dairy farm. Kundert started flying in 1938 and was one of the few enlisted Navy men to fly a PBY Catalina seaplane, but the Japanese shot his plane down in World War II.
