(BPT) - For years Dwight Nadig and his wife suffered through the cold winters in their York, Pa., ranch-style home, originally built in 1979.

Understanding the past can help us better appreciate the present and look toward the future. If you want a more meaningful vacation, an excursion to one of America’s most significant sites can be a step straight into history. Why not celebrate the Gettysburg Address’ and Yosemite National Park’s 150th anniversaries by delving into the rich landscape that hosted each monumental achievement?

Because sole authorship of the Declaration of Independence is regularly attributed to deist Thomas Jefferson, its four “God” references are considered references to his decidedly ambiguous and non-Christian god. Therefore, many falsely teach that the identity of the God of the Declaration may be subjectively determined, or can be no God at all.

I agree with Michael Nedderman (Reader reflections, Aug. 10) that atheists are trying to revise U.S. history by falsely asserting that the founders were certainly not Christians (quoting David Diskin’s Aug. 2 letter).
Saturday, September 7, 2013 12:00 am
David Diskin begins his Aug. 2 letter accurately: “Pastor Frank Nolton recently suggested that our country was founded on Christian principles.” However, Diskin concludes his atheistic epistle with this amazing affirmation clearly intended to imply opposition to Pastor Nolton’s position: “This is not a nation founded upon Christ.”

Congratulations to Lodi High School teenager Grant Goehring for leading a charge that lifted the Dollar Tree’s student restrictions. Under the former policy, only two students were allowed in the store at the same time.

It is truly shameful that one who rejects the Bible’s truths (David Diskin’s letter of Aug. 3) feels compelled to twist God’s Word and revise U.S. history to support the atheist lie that America was not founded upon Christian principles.

Pastor Frank Nolton recently suggested that our country was founded on Christian principles. Was it?

Seems to me Detroit's declaration of bankruptcy — like Stockton's and San Bernardino's — is a threat to the very foundation of the nation.

Actually, Common Core is short for “Common Core State Standards,” or CCSS. The short version of the story is that CCSS is a federal program to nationalize and unilaterally control education.

Recently, the Lodi Public Library sponsored a two-part seminar designed to enlighten residents about the many challenges U.S. Supreme Court justices face when they try to interpret the Constitution's often vague language. Courtney Martin and William Whaley, students at University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law, tackled the difficult task of explaining, among other questions, what exactly the Founding Fathers may have envisioned when they wrote the Constitution.

I am proud of the July Fourth holiday, definitely a legitimate holiday. Indeed, the Declaration of Independence established the people's independence from England, and they styled themselves as the "States of America," an entity which still exists today — but it is not used. In spite of the blunders which followed, one event is undisputed: Lord Cornwallis surrendered his sword to General Washington in 1781, and England lost its claim to the land.

A few weeks ago in my column, I wondered why President Obama chose to run for re-election. Had Obama declined the nomination, he could have retired from politics as the first African-American president, elected in a landslide and a Nobel Prize winner. Obama could then declare victory on all fronts and start his new career as a multimillion dollar author and public speaker.

In Lodi, the man who loves America most was born on a tiny island on the other side of the world.

The United States of America was born because men felt it burning within that they could rule themselves. That freedom wasn't something you were given by another man with a title, but something that you were born with.

Continuing our definition of the tenets of the Tea Party Group of Lodi, in this installment, we will be defining "constitutionally limited" government.

Valentine's Day — already! The garden seems to think everything
must bloom as a gift to us all, but I hope all this enthusiasm
doesn't get squelched by a late frost. As it is, a heavy rain could
do damage, because the bulbs haven't had enough sleep to grow as
tall as they should before blooming. I shall cross my fingers and
hope a lot.

Occupy, a group whose origin I do not know, has come to my
attention through casual conversation, especially as a result of
news media coverage. In spite of their effort, it appears to me
that they are protesting in general, without offering a plausible
remedy and without specific identification of the problem.

The name "Compass" on the marquee of the lending institution
across from the Lodi Public Library is indicative of where we are
in this era. During a time when the urge to break the Tenth
Commandment was prevalent, a well-manned catapult was all it took.
No man's castle was secure from the rained terror of stoners.

What do Americans want from government? They want truth,
honesty, financial accountability and strong moral fiber. What we
have is misspeaking — lies, greed — lobbyists, corruption — pork

Three years have passed since with great sadness we moved from
Lodi to Pittsburgh, Pa. Rarely has a day gone by when some
comparison isn’t made between the two cities’ quality of life. What
it boils down to is that east versus west represents the great
trade-off. The weather is better in California but the quality of
life is superior in Pennsylvania.
