A convicted serial killer could be temporarily freed from death row to help search for the remains of long-dead victims under a bill state lawmakers approved Thursday.
The measure is aimed at getting direct help from Wesley Shermantine, who is awaiting execution for four murders. The bill proposes temporarily releasing him into investigators' custody under heavy guard.
Authorities say Shermantine and his childhood buddy, Loren Herzog, engaged in a methamphetamine-fueled killing spree in the 1980s and 90s.

A Sacramento TV station has announced that it has received a
letter from convicted murderer Wesley Shermantine Jr.
In the hand-written letter dated Feb. 14, Shermantine said he
has never written in any previous letters to the media that he
killed anyone or put anyone in a well.
Crews from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department searched
for about a week in a well on Flood Road, east of Escalon-Bellota
Road near Linden, for remains of victims believed to have been
murdered by Shermantine, Loren Herzog or both.

The unusually hazardous conditions in the Mokelumne River this
year are causing the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office to
consider closing the river to the public for safety reasons.
The Mokelumne and rivers throughout California are plagued by
swifter-moving water due to late-season storms and snow at the
higher elevations. It's also a whole lot colder even if it's hot
outside the water.
Mokelumne and Clements firefighters rescued seven rafts between
Friday and Sunday. No injuries were reported.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office has named Howard D.
Smith, 40, as the suspect they believe shot and killed two people
and wounded a third individual on Friday afternoon.
Smith was arrested shortly after the vehicle he was driving
collided with another vehicle on southbound Highway 99 at Harney
Lane, according to sheriff's Deputy Dave Konecny.
Smith, whose residence was not disclosed, was booked into San
Joaquin County Jail in French Camp on suspicion of two counts of
homicide, one count of attempted murder and burglary.

entering two separate residences in the 24000 block of Homestead
Lane around 4:30 p.m. and opening fire, Konecny said. The suspect

police, Konecny said, and led them on a pursuit on southbound
Highway 99. During the chase, Konecny said the suspect brandished a
firearm before ultimately crashing near the Harney Lane exit, and
was then taken into custody without incident.
