2012 has been widely hailed as an exceptional year for film, but I’m at a loss as to where all these great films are supposed to be. (But then, if we’ve lowered our standards of “greatness” to the point that something like “Silver Linings Playbook” is being proclaimed as a masterwork ... .)

Happy holidays to one and all! It’s getting to be the most wonderful time of the year, and one of the most wonderful things about it is the bevy of movie options that typically grace us during the last couple months of the year.

Lodi Fire Capt. Joe Hansen spent more than 25 years in the service of saving lives. However, in the cold, dark hours of May 3, there was no one present to try to save his life as he lay on a mountainous shoulder of Highway 88 — the latest victim on a stretch of highway that has killed numerous motorcyclists and harmed many more.

Hope you all had a great Christmas and are enjoying the final
hours of 2011. My holiday season has been quite relaxing indeed,
with the exception of the screening blitz I’ve been embroiled in
since I realized the first draft of my year-end top 10 list was
woefully inadequate. I’m trying to cram in as many movies as I can
before my list is due for publication next week, and the experience
has been mind-reeling but, of course, invigorating in its own
way.

I had promised reviews of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “The
Sitter” this week, but those plans were altered by the fact that my
online source for such matters had listed an incorrect wide release
date for the former, and the nation’s critics and moviegoing public
have convinced me that I should skip the latter. So we are left
with “The Descendants,” now playing in general release after
generating incredible word of mouth during its run on the art-house
circuit. I found it to be consistently engaging yet slightly
disappointing given the buzz, but your mileage may vary.

See, I told you things were looking up for the summer movie
season. This weekend sees the debut of “Rise of the Planet of the
Apes,” which is garnering some very favorable early reviews (I’ll
have a look next week), and I hear that “Captain America: First
Avenger” is an increasingly rare example of a superhero flick done
right. (I was supposed to do a dual review this week to include it,
but life intervened. Assume that you have my blessing to see
it.)

The summer movie season, after a horrifyingly dull couple of
months, may come to a decent close after all. The impeccably
written and acted “Horrible Bosses” will be around for a few more
weeks (catch it if you haven’t, or face my ire), and the final
“Harry Potter” recently opened to great audience approval.

Sometimes — not often, but sometimes — I see a movie so
completely worthless that I wish I could dispense with a full
review and simply say something like, “‘Larry Crowne’ should be
avoided on the grounds that it is stupid, and also Julia Roberts is
a hag.’” It’s simple, succinct and tells you everything you need to
know.

This weekend saw the releases of “The Expendables” and “Scott
Pilgrim vs. the World,” the final two “event” movies of Summer
2010. One or both will be reviewed next week, followed by looks at
“Piranha 3D” (behold, the triumphant reunion of Elizabeth Shue and
Christopher Lloyd!) and then “Centurion” to finish out the season
ahead of the George Clooney vehicle “The American.”
