What’s the attraction: Landscape painter Francis McComas called Point Lobos “the greatest meeting of land and water in the world.” Hiking on any of the trails along the rocky shores and high cliffs, with stands of towering Monterey pines and short, twisted cypress trees on one side and crashing waves on the other, makes it easy to see why.

Think about it: A highway that stretches across states, the odd
appeal of roadside attractions, the greasiness of truck
stop burgers and the resonating lyrics of a perfectly planned
playlist. It is time for a summer road trip.

Although I am not very familiar with the work of Elizabeth
Taylor (my film interests tend to run more toward the post-1965 New
Hollywood), I would be remiss not to acknowledge her death on
Wednesday at the age of 79. And although I definitely need to brush
up on my 1950s melodramas, I know enough to admire the woman. In
addition to delivering strong performances in the few early roles
I’ve seen her in (most notably the Tennessee Williams adaptations
“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and the oft-neglected “Suddenly Last
Summer”), she was also key to the success of 1966’s monumentally
important “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, which served as a
much-needed slap in the face to the era’s Hays-code social mores,
and also won Taylor a second Oscar as best actress.

Teacher Martha Snider was at Christa McAulliffe Middle School
working on Lodi Unified School District’s computer system one
Friday morning when a power glitch at the district administrative
office disrupted the data.
The network server had gone down. Again.
Dale Munsch’s cell phone stuffed in his pocket alerted him to
the issue and repairs began almost immediately. As the director of
technology services, he is, after all, the first line of defense in
getting the district’s computer system back up and running as
quickly as possible before precious data is lost.

Roads are damaged. Trucks carrying supplies to help those in
need are unable to get through. Many people are living in
communities of tents. Some are living on the streets. For those who
have water, the supply is dirty. Many don’t have any water or food.
Disease is everywhere. This is the scene Elissa Kessler witnessed
when she volunteered to work in a hospital in Haiti in May.
