“If you’re stumbling through it tonight, you ought to be able to run it on Thursday,” said Mike Bartram, one half of the directing team for “Lodi’s Got Talent!” He and Sabrina Willis-Bartram have organized the second installment of the annual Lodi area talent show. There are singers, dancers, guitar players and one young performer who looked to her mother’s kitchen cabinets to find an instrument. All are looking for their shot at a bit of Lodi fame.

Dear Straight Talk: I’m 16, hoping for a fresh start at a new high school after leaving my old one because I was being bullied. I’m pretty small for a guy and not very athletic. I mostly seemed to make friends with girls at my other school, which made everyone think I was gay, even though I’m not. Being picked on made me socially awkward at school, though I’m not socially awkward ordinarily and wasn’t before high school. I’m paranoid about being a target at the new school. A Lodi woman was sure her grandson needed her help — so sure that she was ready to send him $1,400 in order to bail him out of a jail in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Fortunately for the woman, a Western Union employee spotted the scam before the money ended up in the hands of thieves.

Soroptimist International of Lodi and Lodi Sunrise recently held an awards night honoring outstanding women and girls. Soroptimist International is a volunteer organization of professional and business women who contribute their time and financial support to community projects benefitting women and girls. SI Lodi recently celebrated 68 years in Lodi.

Keep your ears open for scams coming in over the phone. The Lodi Police Department has received reports of telephone scammers posing as the victim's grandchild and asking for money to help them out of jail in Mexico or Canada.

The Tokay High School girls water polo team will head back to
their home pool, but the Tigers’ postseason is far from over. Tokay
advanced in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs with Friday’s 19-6
drubbing of Turlock, earning the right to face Davis High School on

We’re moving into the fall movie season this week with a look at
Steven Soderbergh’s disease pot-boiler “Contagion,” with a review
of Nicolas Winding Refn’s hotly anticipated crime thriller “Drive”
coming next time. After that we’ll hit a bit of a lull with
(tentatively scheduled) reviews of the lighthearted inside-baseball
flick “Moneyball” and the cancer dramedy “50/50,” but I’m confident
that things will pick up again soon. And, as I said before, be on
the lookout for periodic horror-themed DVD picks as we approach
