Lodi Community Band elects new officers for the 2014-2015 year. They are as follows:

The Lodi Garden Club has a new committee, Garden of the Month. The chairman is Curt Juran and members are Susanne Benbrook, Tom Gooding, Marwedell Norman, Carol Marvel, Gordon Schmierer, Teva Tetiva, and Janice Vaughn. The purpose is to recognize and encourage good gardening in the community. Garden Club member will nominate gardens that show aesthetic appeal above and beyond the normal everyday landscape. Owners who are selected will be interviewed and photos of their Garden of the Month published. The recipient shall receive a Certificate of Recongniton and a yard sign. Just a reminder that we're still offering free swimming at Blakely Park this weekend, including Monday (Labor Day), before closing our public swim program for the season.

Growing squash is a staple of most home gardens. Whether summer variety, like zucchini and yellow, or winter, such as acorn or butternut, squash grows so prolifically here in the Valley that often the gardener has more than one household can consume or even give away.

Fred Hoffman recently spent some time in the new cardiac unit at Lodi Memorial Hospital. After open-heart surgery at a Sacramento hospital last year, the Herald resident drove to the center on South Fairmont Avenue and rode a stationary bicycle or walked on a treadmill while nurses monitored his heart rate, three days a week for 12 weeks.
We had our first days of free swimming at Blakely Park last weekend, and weather did its best not to cooperate!

Thanks to local donors, it will be free to swim every weekend this summer at Blakely Park pool. Those swim sessions begin this Saturday, despite ongoing construction at the smaller pool.

Two scholarships were presented by Suzanne Benbrook in the absence of Carol Marvel, scholarship chairman, of the Lodi Garden Club. They went to Jordan Sparrowk of Lodi High School and Ut Huynh of Bear Creek High School. Both have been active beyond their school classrooms.

Vases of roses, orchids, and other spring flowers set the mood for the year’s final meeting of Lodi Garden Club. Installation of officers, presentation of awards and a potluck luncheon also marked the event.

Filling three board of directors vacancies, the Lodi Community Band members have elected Barbara Portal to a second three-year term. She will also continue as board president. Carol Marvel was also re-elected and will serve as board secretary. Fred Mckendry was newly elected to fill the third vacancy and is band room manager. Other current board members include Sue Meyer, vice president, and Duane Purdy, treasurer.

Tuesday's front page article on the celebration of the 75th
anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge brought back
fond memories. I was one of the 200,000 excited San Franciscans who
walked across the bridge that day.

during the club’s recent annual luncheon meeting at the Woodbridge

The Lodi Garden Club is in the midst of celebrations. On Nov. 2,
the club celebrated its 65th birthday. And on Dec. 6, the club will
have its annual Christmas luncheon at Woodbridge Golf and County
Club. Social hour will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at noon.
Festivities will include Christmas music, arranged by Carol Marvel,
parliamentarian and scholarship chairperson. Members are reminded
that reservations must be made by Thursday with the club treasurer,
Esther Kreth at 367-1544.

Music has been a part of Bob Gross's life for as long as he can
remember. He began playing the French horn at age 9, and he
continues 60 years later. He enjoys being able to share music with
others, and has done so by playing his instrument in various local
bands and serving as a music director.

Six Lodians have been named to the Lodi Community Hall of Fame
for 2011. Sponsored by the Lodi Boys and Girls Club, the Hall of
Fame program recognizes local men and women who have made enduring
contributions to the Lodi community. Inductees are to be honored at
a dinner and program set for Nov. 5.

What a wonderful weekend of music we have ahead of us Aug. 14
and 15. Not only will we have the honor of hearing and seeing the
Travis Air Force Band and the Yamanashi Youth Band from Japan on
Monday, Aug. 15, but our own Lodi Community Band will perform their
annual summer concert on the lawn at Hutchins Street Square on
Sunday evening, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Bud Sullivan had a problem saying no, whether it was
volunteering for a local organization or taking his daughter for a
late-night ice cream run.
"He was a really generous, nice man and always willing to get
involved. He's an extremely high achiever, and looking back I'm
just now realizing all of his accomplishments. I'm so proud of
him," said his daughter, Stacey Heminger.
