The Catholic diocese serving parishes from Lodi to Turlock has spent about $15 million in judgments, settlements and legal costs regarding clergy abuse cases by priests and former priests, according to Bishop Stephen Blaire.

The Diocese of Stockton announced Wednesday that it has reached a $1.75 million negotiated settlement with attorneys for a man who was a victim of sexual abuse by notorious pedophile priest Oliver O’Grady in the 1980s. The abuse occurred in Stockton, but Sacred Heart Parish in Turlock also was named as a defendant, leading to the filing of the lawsuit in Stanislaus County.

A June trial date has been set in the criminal case against Galt High School Assistant Principal Robert Rappleye. The date was set Friday in Calaveras County Superior Court.

During a court appearance Monday, a Galt High School assistant principal charged with assault with a deadly weapon in an alleged golf course incident waived his preliminary hearing and is expected to enter a plea at another appearance Nov. 30, according to Calaveras Superior Court records.

Judge Bob McNatt said on Monday that he will decide in about two
weeks which is more important — Father Michael Kelly's privacy or
the public's right to know that he is an accused pedophile.
Kelly, a popular priest at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in
Lockeford, is the subject of a civil lawsuit filed in 2008, in
which a man now 37 years old claims that Kelly sexually abused him
in the 1980s. Kelly was a priest at Church of the Annunciation in
Stockton when the alleged abuse took place. The plaintiff's name
has not been disclosed.
