Two of the highest-ranking officials from the Stockton Catholic Diocese — Vicar General Monsignor Richard Ryan and Chancellor Barbara Thiella — took the witness stand Friday as the third week of Father Michael Kelly's civil trial came to a close.
Kelly, pastor of St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Lockeford for the past eight years, was tentatively scheduled to defend himself in the lawsuit filed by a former altar boy, but it appears that Kelly won't testify until at least Tuesday.

Judge Bob McNatt said on Monday that he will decide in about two
weeks which is more important — Father Michael Kelly's privacy or
the public's right to know that he is an accused pedophile.
Kelly, a popular priest at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in
Lockeford, is the subject of a civil lawsuit filed in 2008, in
which a man now 37 years old claims that Kelly sexually abused him
in the 1980s. Kelly was a priest at Church of the Annunciation in
Stockton when the alleged abuse took place. The plaintiff's name
has not been disclosed.
