First of all, many thanks to all of you who sent such nice Christmas cards to our house. We really appreciate your thoughts. Sending cards, though planned for, just didn't happen here. We thought about everybody a lot and if thought transference works, we did fine! Also, although I don't approve of email messages in place of hand-written ones, I received such a nice one that I forwarded it to those whose email addresses I had.

Shirley Mason first learned to can as a child by watching her
mother. Mason, who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, learns from her church that growing fruits and
vegetables and preserving them is beneficial to aid the family
during a disaster, a job loss or just helping out a neighbor in
need. Mason cans zucchini relish, asparagus, pickled string beans,
peppers and several types of jelly. Her favorite item she cans is
her vegetable tomato mix.

Nothing complements a piece of warm, buttered toast like a
smacking of homemade jam or jelly. But don’t limit jam to
breakfast. Some find it just as decadent when it is poured over
brie and served with crackers as an hors d’oeuvre. Others use it
to top off ice cream. And if it doesn’t quite come together in the
cooking process, it is tasty enough to get creative with it.
