CHICAGO — Chicago’s Daley Plaza, long home to privately maintained Christmas and Hanukkah displays, now has a giant letter “A” representing the atheist and agnostic community.
Gary Alexander gets into the mood for the holiday season by doing charity work – buying clothes for the homeless, donating to a shelter and, this year, as a gift to his mother, he’s paying off a layaway ticket for someone he doesn’t know.

Many letters seem to be published in Lodi News-Sentinel bemoaning the removal of religion in certain institutions such as schools, military and government meetings; many more crying over the loss of faith and worship to Jesus. Something goes forgotten in many of these letters, and that is freedom. Freedom is something I celebrate in this country as an atheist, and I will fight for any individual’s religion, creed or philosophy.

It is always interesting to find a letter from an avowed atheist on a Religion page. Of course, atheism is a religion, as are many other beliefs. But atheism is special for Christian believers, because atheists are actually proving that God is very, very real.

Recently, it has come to my attention that new curriculum loaded with communism is being introduced and forced upon our schools. Some teachers are objecting and are being warned they may lose their jobs if they make too many ripples by exposing it.

Although many Bible verses pertain to truth, only one mentions "philosophy": "See to it that no one deceives you by philosophy and elements of the world and not according to Christ" (Colossians 2:8). Be careful of confusing "man-made" with divine sacred tradition which we are to hold fast (2 Thessalonians 2:15).

News-Sentinel staff writer Ross Farrow's (Sept. 1) article, "Author explains why she became atheist," was a sad story. It announced the book "Religion Made Me Fat," by AmyJo Mattheis, which documents her fall from Christianity into atheism.

Today is a "Hug an Atheist Day," according to Lodi atheist Sarah Tygert. The day was initiated four years ago by a man named William Bermudez, who encourages everyone to find an atheist, agnostic, Zen Buddhist or anyone else who questions the existence of a god, and then give that person a hug.

But this year, Gov. Jerry Brown’s office sent an email informing
the group he would not issue a message for them.
So at their annual celebration at McGeorge School of Law this
Sunday, nonbelievers will display the proclamations that were
signed. Next to them will be an empty frame, symbolizing the one
they did not receive from Brown.

allegedly renown biblical scholar and author who lectured Thursday
