With her nose inches from the paper, Allison Keagy, 16, draws a cartoon hamburger while at her Lodi home on March 21. Keagy suffers from optic nerve coloboma, a defect that severely restricts her vision. (Camera: Nikon D3s. Lens: Nikkor 17-35mm at 35mm. Exposure: 1/15th sec. at f/2.8. ISO: 800)
Photographer’s note: This was one of my favorite stories and photo series of the year. Watching Allison create works of art while only being able to see a few inches beyond her nose was incredible. I like this photo because it demonstrates how she goes about drawing while so close to the paper, and her concentration.

The interior of the Artist's Palette Cafe is seen Thursday morning in Lodi. The cafe, located at Bella Terra Plaza on Kettleman Lane, should be open in the coming weeks, according to owner Jan Bielski. Bielski, who was born in Stockton and raised in the Bay Area, said Bella Terra Plaza appealed to her because it provides a relaxing setting for customers. "It's comfortable and it's a nice environment," she said. The Artist's Palette Cafe will serve sandwiches, salads, coffee, beer and wine.

Cartoonists, painters, sculptors and creative types in general
look for inspiration wherever they can get it. Obviously for
editorial cartoonists, inspiration comes from the daily news. There
is no shortage of grist for our opinionated mills.

Sometimes a colleagues personality lends itself perfectly to a
cartoon. Case in point: Dan Evans, the News-Sentinel's chief photo
man. I drew the accompanying cartoon of him over lunch today.

Just south of Lodi is a city where you can visit massive
Buddhist statues and see Carrie Underwood perform in the same day,
where you can browse the Internet and listen to an acoustic show at
the same time, where you can see a live symphony for free in a
park. Stockton has a lot to offer those who crave arts and culture,
whether it is live music or the arts.

What started as a plan to find a painting studio for painter
Ronald Houck has turned into Lodi's newest fine art gallery, Studio
20, which opened this week at 20 Elm St. in Downtown Lodi. With its
bright, freshly painted walls, studio lighting, hardwood floors and
large window that allows natural light to flow in, Studio 20 will
show largely figurative and abstract art. Though Houck is the
resident artist, the gallery will also feature other Northern
California artists.

In these difficult economic times people are apt to put off or
delay many things. Big ticket and luxury items often are the first
things to be cut. Scaling back and cutting expenditures is given
increased importance - the city of Lodi is no different.
