Tokay goes on the road looking to stay unbeaten vs. upset-minded Galt
- Tonight’s game at a glance
Liberty Ranch vs. Gregori
When: Today, 7:15 p.m.
Where: Galt High School.
Records: Liberty Ranch (1-2); Gregori (3-0).
Last week: Liberty Ranch lost to Yuba City 37-7; Gregori defeated Bear Creek 15-12.
Last meeting: Liberty Ranch defeated Gregori 64-33 last season.
Preview: The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Hawks, whose four opponents thus far have a combined record of 9-2.
After getting shredded by Yuba City’s balanced offensive attack last week (243 yards passing, 213 yards rushing), the Liberty Ranch defense will face a more one-dimensional threat in the Jaguars. Gregori, which averages 33 points a game, relies almost exclusively on the running game, with 1,009 yards on the ground and only 45 through the air. Four Jaguar players have already rushed for 150 or more yards.
However, Liberty Ranch coach Darin Higgins is quick to point out that Gregori’s only two completions have gone for touchdowns. “You still have to be concerned about the pass,” Higgins said. “They run the ball effectively and then suck you in and throw a pass. They are a run-first team, but you can’t over commit.”
As for his team’s offensive inconsistencies, Higgins said the Hawks have simplified the game plan to try to spark the attack. “We’ve had some injuries and had to shuffle people around, and with this being the first year in the offense it’s made it difficult for the players. We’re hoping that simplifying the offense will get our running game going and get guys out in space.”
Noteworthy: Trevon Windley had a late 51-yard TD run for Liberty Ranch’s only score in last week’s loss. Vincent Trejo had two catches for 92 yards. Defensive back Gavin Westlund led the defense with 11 tackles.
Quoteworthy: “We’re excited to have an opportunity to play a program like Gregori, which is undefeated at all levels. It’s a good opportunity to compete against a good program.”
