Nine years ago my prep sports writing career began while crammed in the corner of a less-than-luxurious Ripon press box.

I was right out of college and it was my first assignment for The Record. I was saddled with Ripon and Summerville football which Ripon went on to win 14-6 before a mad scramble ensued. I was desperate for dial-up Internet connection, and long story short, I sent my story way past deadline to the news desk that I’m sure wasn’t real happy. The story got in the paper and I improved over the next nine years while having a blast getting to know the area sports teams.
