When the offense stalled, the defense stole the show. The Tokay Tigers varsity girls water polo team came up with timely steals and played suffocating defense on Merced’s top scoring threat in the Tigers’ 7-5 victory over the Bears in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs at Johansen High School in Modesto on Friday.
Brooke Mahoney and Victoria Jones each had three goals for Tokay (16-12), and that proved to be enough with the inspired defensive effort.
