Jason Coupe was trapped. Knowing he had the energy and speed to win the 800-meter run at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters championships on Friday, the Galt senior was boxed in the middle of the pack.

Then he turned to Cordova's Josh Gruver, a friend Coupe has been running against for four years, and asked for help. Gruver complied, creating an opening for Coupe, who took it and sprinted the final 500 meters to win the 800 crown at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium.
