Robert Sperling’s first year in charge of the Lodi Flames varsity football team came with mixed results. He took over for 15-year coach Todd Dillon and installed a Wing-T attack that had trouble early on.

But the Flames eventually improved and highlighted the season with a 40-38 victory of Calaveras, a longtime Mother Lode League contender.
