Julian Villanueva turned in the performance over the weekend that his coach has been waiting for. The Lodi Flames senior wrestler was called upon as an alternate (ninth) out of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I-A tournament last year, advancing to the Masters Championship. He followed this year with an up-and-down regular season before easily reaching Masters on Saturday with a fifth-place finish at 113 pounds.
On Friday at Franklin of Elk Grove, Villanueva lost 10-0 to Ponderosa’s Zach Miller in his second match and was sent to the consolation bracket. He recovered to win three matches, including a 5-3 victory over Miller to finish.
