No more competitive swimming. It was a painful message that seemed, at first, like a grim reality last year for 15-year-old Natalie Bowman.

The Lodi Swim Club phenom had been dealing with idiopathic scoliosis, a curved deformity of the spine, since the age of 11 — but the back brace she had worn for the past three years was not doing enough to treat it.
