On a practice field on the southern edge of Sacramento State, six-figure salary earners workout unassumingly.
The group of recent MLB draftees is usually about a half dozen, mainly relief pitchers who gather a few times a week. Each with either high school or college ties to the area, they train with strength coach Tom Ruelas next to John Smith Field. Among them is former Galt High School standouts Ryan Mattheus and Justin Souza, who played at Sacramento City College. The players run and stretch and do strength exercises in ordinary gym clothes and go virtually unnoticed by the waves of students passing by.
