Phillip Kruse saved his best for last. The Lodi Flames varsity boys track and field long-distance specialist closed out the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Championships with a new school record in the 3200-meter race at Elk Grove High School on Friday.

Kruse placed fourth in the event, clocking a time of 9 minutes, 29.42 seconds. That was about a second better than Joe Garza’s old Lodi record that had stood since 1979.
