Lodi Flames varsity girls basketball coach Jim Staal preaches attacking the rim to his players. That philosophy paid off as the Flames connected on seven of eight free throws in overtime to edge the Chavez Titans 57-52 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association opener for both teams in The Inferno at Lodi High School on Tuesday.

“We wanted to keep pushing the ball upcourt to get to the rim and either draw fouls or get good kickouts to our perimeter shooters,” Staal said. “Tonight, we got the fouls we wanted down the stretch and made the free throws we needed to get the win.”
