Former Liberty Ranch Hawks head softball coach Joe Ortiz, 49, died Friday, three days after suffering a massive stroke. Ortiz was a 1983 graduate of Lodi High School who played baseball for the Flames and is the father of current Fresno State softball star Brooke Ortiz.

Joe Ortiz was a popular figure in the Lodi summer fast-pitch softball club circles, known for his high-intensity and gung-ho coaching style which often produced winning teams that reflected his personality.
