Last week, Garrett Baffoni was focusing on his school work and his golf game. This week, the Lodi High junior is laid up at UC Davis Medical Center with a broken back and awaiting word on whether he has to have surgery.

Baffoni, the No. 1 golfer on Lodi's varsity golf team, broke his back in three places in a snowboarding accident at Kirkwood Mountain Resort on Saturday. He broke two vertebrae in the thoracic region of his back (middle), but the fracture that's most troublesome is in his L1 vertebrae in his lower back. Baffoni's mother Pam said the vertebrae burst and doctors are worried the fragments of the bone could damage his spinal cord.
