The Lodi Flames varsity volleyball team was denied a postseason berth when it lost to the Bear Creek Bruins in a five-set thriller during a playoff tiebreaker on Tuesday.
Both teams finished 5-5 and tied for third in the San Joaquin Athletic Association standings, and only three teams from the league qualify for the playoffs. That led to Tuesday’s showdown, with Lodi taking the first set only to watch Bear Creek rally and take the next two. After the Flames evened the match by taking the fourth game, the Bruins eked out a close win in the decisive game for a 19-25, 25-21, 28-26, 13-25, 16-14 victory.
