Kate Casey is facing more than a steep, treacherous terrain for a half-marathon. She is trying to conquer a figurative mountain, as well. The 25-year-old philanthropist, a Lodi native and former University of the Pacific water polo player who has finished a year at the university’s law school, is taking part in the Quito Run — a running event in Ecuador this Saturday to raise money for refugees who fled to the country from Colombia.
The run takes place in Ecuador’s hilly capital city of Quito, which is positioned on a high plateau 9,500 feet above sea level and located in the middle of an active volcanic mountain range.
