Boys basketball: Hawks outlast Falcons in overtime, advance to section championship

Admission: $17 adults, $8 students (parking is $12 for cars, $30 for buses).
At stake: The winner is the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion. Both teams have already earned a berth in the NorCal Championships.

Road to semifinals
Liberty Ranch finished tied for second in the Sierra Valley Conference with a 9-3 league mark. Summerville won the Mother Lode League title with a 13-0 record.

The two section title game participants both have berths in the Northern California Championship playoffs.

This is Liberty Ranch’s fourth-ever playoff game, all of them coming this season.
This is Summerville’s fourth playoff appearance since 2004-2005. The Bears are 0-2 in section title games, their last one being a 48-42 loss to Colfax.

Philip Ricci found out through text message. For 15 years, the Galt basketball legend had towered as the city’s top scorer. No longer. When Michael Meserole of the Liberty Ranch Hawks set the new mark this season, Ricci’s nephew Xavier, a sophomore at the school, let him know.
“He said , ‘I think Mike just broke it,’” Ricci said. “I was so happy for him. I was like, ‘Wow really, he’s having that kind of season.’”
