I learned it is better to give, than receive Shaniece Valencia Well, I would like to share with you my most memorable memory. First, to set the mood, imagine you are 6 years old looking forward to seeing Santa Clause and his reindeers drop beautiful presents for you and your family through your chimney. Even though I have never seen that happen, I’ve never felt disappointed about it. The night before Christmas, spirits running high, especially for a 6 year old girl, I was expecting a lot of presents that year. I received and gave a lot more than I had thought I would. What I had received could never be bought or wrapped. The greatest gift I received that year was the greatest gift anyone could receive, the gift of giving. I was only 6 years old, but I still understood the concept that it is better to give than to receive. I was very confused when my mother told me and my older brother that we were going to be visiting a homeless shelter for Christmas. I was kind of upset because I wasn’t going to be home to see Santa. But of course, what Mom said went. So on Christmas Eve morning, we all hopped in the car and headed down to the shelter, and the moment we set foot in that place it was like a overwhelming rush of sadness. Because I was young, I did not understand what poverty was. I didn’t understand what I was looking at. To me, it was just a room full of unbathed women, men and children. I remember going around the room saying, “Merry Christmas” to everyone in sight. I received the same remark back from everyone. That night we all sat around a burning trash can singing Christmas carols and sipping hot cocoa. That was the day I learned the true meaning of the old saying, “It is better to give than to receive.” Lodinews Home | News | Sports
