Fog couldn’t stop this special delivery Anna Krengl My Christmas is imagined; then again, it is very real. The story has been told to me so often that I can see it. The story is my parent’s Christmas memory of my arrival from Korea in December of 1989. You see, I was supposed to come in March of 1990, but I guess I surprised them. I came early, in time for Christmas. On December 13, 1989 my parents got a call that I would arrive at Los Angeles International Airport in five days. My mom says nothing was ready for me. There were no baby clothes, no crib and not quite enough money to cover all of the adoption expenses. My dad just laughed and said everything would be okay. The day before my plane was due in Los Angeles ,my dad started to worry about the fog. Somehow he got a flight out of Stockton and spent the night in Los Angeles while my mom and brother stayed home in Lodi. The morning of December 18th was thick with fog; my dad had been right. He would never had made it to Los Angeles to meet me if he hadn’t gone the night before. As the story goes, my waited for news of my arrival. Finally, she had my father paged at the airport. He called her back with great news. He was holding me and trying very hard to get a flight to Sacramento. Good thing my mom packed so much formula and so many diapers for my dad to take with him. A lot of my family-to-be met my mom and brother, Stuart, at the Sacramento airport to wait for me. My Uncle Erik, Aunt Kathy, Cousin Anders, and my Grandma Carol waited and waited. My mom says the fog was as thick as a blanket and the airport was very crowded with other people waiting for flights to arrive and depart. Then there was the miracle. Robert Matsui, an important politician in California at the time noticed my dad holding the heavy diaper bag and me. He said to my dad, “Do you need to get to Sacramento?” My dad said, “Oh, yes!” Mr. Matsui said, “Come with me.” He took my dad onto his flight, which turned out to be the only flight from Los Angles to Sacramento that day. I made it into my mother’s arms on December 28, 1989 and was then passed around by all the family. My mom says on Christmas Day she put me under the tree. I was four months old. I was home for Christmas. Lodinews Home | News | Sports
