Gifts don’t go under the tree

Shannon Ferrero
Woodbridge
Honorable Mention: Juvenile Division, Nonfiction

There are many good memories I have about Christmas. Whether it’s going around looking at Christmas lights or selecting the perfect tree, they all stick in my mind. Despite all these wonderful memories, there is one that sticks in my mind even more. It’s probably not the best thing to remember about Christmas, but somehow when I think of Christmas, I think of this.

It was a week before Christmas. We had just gotten our tree, so we put our wrapped presents under it. The next day while my mom was at work, my brother and I had just gotten home from school and we supposedly had a brilliant idea. We just couldn’t stand looking at those presents under the tree. So, very carefully, we started to unwrap them.

After each one was unwrapped and the wrapping paper neatly folded in a few piles, we decided to wrap them back up before my mom got home. We had 30 minutes to do it, so we took our time. After each present was carefully wrapped and placed back under the tree so that all the tape pieces weren’t visible, we waited on the couch for our mom to get home.

Finally, we heard a car in the driveway. As my mom unlocked the door, we tried our best to act as normal as possible, but for some reason, couldn’t keep a straight face. My mom walked in and asked, “What’s so funny?” We quickly replied, “nothing.”

The first thing she did was walk toward our Christmas tree to look at our presents. We left the room as quickly as possible and locked ourselves in our bedrooms. She soon found out what she had done and we got in big trouble.

I guess my mom realized something, because now she takes all our presents to her friend’s house until the day before Christmas Eve.
