Memories of the year Lily the mouse learned about Santa Claus

Kelsey Evans
Woodbridge
Honorable Mention: Juvenile Division, Fiction

’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. NOT EVEN A MOUSE! I was stirring.

My name is Lily. I am a mouse. I was up late wrapping presents for my children: Michael, Ashley and Josh, when suddenly I head a loud sound! There was pounding on our roof that nearly shook the whole house. I peeked out of the entrance to our cozy home — a hole in the baseboard of the living room of an old Victorian mansion. I saw nothing in the room, so I went back inside.

I had returned to wrapping cheese balls and crackers when I heard a sound coming from the fireplace. Something or someone was inside the fireplace! I waited for a minute until the sound was gone. Then I heard creaking on the living room floor. I was too frightened to look. I went into my children’s room until I heard snoring. I woke up Ashley, who was the oldest. I told her watch her siblings. Before I could get to the door, Michael and Jose woke up. Since everyone was now awake I told them what was happening. They wanted to go with me, so I let them. But I was afraid for their safety. I told them to stay close to me.

We went out the hole and into the living room. Ashley spoke up. She saw someone lying on the couch. We scurried up and saw a jolly man, dressed in a big red suit, with rosy cheeks, a cherry nose and a long white beard. We had no clue who he was.

Josh and Michael smelled cookie crumb on his beard, and before I could stop them they were nibbling cookie off his face. Their whiskers tickled his nose and he woke up and said, “HO HO HO.” Then he said, “How are you mice doing?”

We didn’t know how to answer so we just asked, “Who are you?”

He responded with, “Well, my name is Santa Claus. I deliver presents to all the children all over the world. America was my last stop this year so I’m pretty tired. The warm milk and cookies made me sleepy. If you didn’t wake me up children in the rest of California or the other states wouldn’t have gotten presents. Lily, Michael, Ashley, and Jose thank you for your help!

“Now who wants to help deliver presents with me?” asked Santa. So Lily, Michael, Ashley and Josh helped deliver presents with Santa. Good thing I, Lily the mouse, was stirring that night, because I saved Christmas!
