While we take the time to remember our loved ones this holiday season, we must not forget to think of Mother Nature. The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp., a nonprofit public service organization dedicated to rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling, offers a free simple solution to preserve the environment: properly disposing of used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones regardless of the season.
The latest technology and hottest gadgets can be found on almost every shopping list, many of which are powered by rechargeable batteries. Although these batteries can be charged up to 1,000 times, which is great for the environment, they eventually need to be replaced and they can and should be recycled through RBRC's Call2Recycle program.
Through Call2Recycle, consumers can recycle their used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones at convenient drop-off boxes housed at major retailers including Best Buy, Target, The Home Depot, Circuit City, Lowe's, RadioShack and many more. To find collection locations near you, call 1-877-2- RECYCLE or log on to www.call2recycle.org for a list of drop-off locations nationwide.
In addition to recycling used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones, here are some other ways to give the gift of green, courtesy of eco-stylist Danny Seo and his book "Simply Green Giving."
For the jewelry lover: Why not recycle a candy box? Just buy a variety of vintage jewelry — rings, charms, necklaces — and fill up the box. Wrap each piece like an exquisite piece of chocolate.
For the entertainer: This year, give the host a one-of-a-kind wine cork trivet that can hold hot, holiday treats. Simply collect about 25 champagne and wine corks that are the same size. Fill the inside of a pipe clamp with the corks and screw it tight around all the corks. The tension will keep them in place.
For the decorator: To add a bit of flair to your gifts, wrap them in fashionable, yet sustainable, materials. Break open an old VHS tape and use the film inside to make a shiny black bow or for smaller gifts, use a potato chip bag! When the chips are eaten, just wash the bag clean with soapy water, and dry. Invert the bag inside out and wrap the presents — you're left with a shiny and chic wrapped gift.
Make a year-round commitment to the environment by remembering to recycle your used rechargeable batteries. Seasons Greenings!
