Visit Lodi's Farmers Market

Downtown Lodi will host 17 Farmers Markets under usually balmy conditions every Thursday evening from June through September.

Three blocks of School Street — between Elm and Walnut streets — are blocked off to traffic, allowing visitors to wander under towering shade trees and sample fruits and vegetables fresh off the local farms found just outside Lodi's city limits.

The market includes more than 20 food vendors, such as Lockeford Sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, Filipino and Chinese food. There will also be a wine and beer garden.

The main attraction is food, but some of the approximately 70 vendors sell antiques, arts and crafts and commercial items.

This year, four of the Thursdays will have special themes, twice as many as in 2006.

On July 5, the Farmers Market will be a continuation of the Independence Day holiday. The International Air Force Band will perform, visitors will get small flags and a celebration of American troops will take place.

The remaining three theme night dates are tentative:

  • Mardi Gras night, featuring the Bayou Boys band and free Mardi Gras beads, July 19.
  • Hawaiian night, complete with Polynesian dancers, free leis for the public, a hula shirt contest and beach balls, Aug. 23.
  • Country-western night, Sept. 13. Details not firmed up.

"We always have something going on," said Jaime Watts, executive director of the Downtown Lodi Business Partnership.

In addition to downtown Lodi's showcase, there are some Farmers Markets in Stockton and Tracy. Stockton One is located in the Dillard's parking lot at Weberstown Mall, Pacific Avenue and March Lane in Stockton, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Sunday and Thursday.

Also in Stockton is a Farmers Market on Tuesdays at Kaiser Permanente, West Lane and Tommydon Street. Dates and times to be announced. And under Highway 4, also known as the Crosstown Freeway, a large Farmers Market featuring fresh eggs, fish, live poultry and produce is held year-round from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays, or when the market is sold out. That market is between El Dorado and San Joaquin streets.

In Tracy, a Wednesday market is held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Central and 10th streets.

Dates: Thursdays from June 7 through Sept. 27.
Time: 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: School Street between Elm and Walnut streets.
