A guide to Lodi hotels and motels

Many visitors come to Lodi for a scenic day trip in the wine country or to shop downtown. Those who stay the night are treated to warm hospitality and attentive service at Lodi's many fine hotels.

Wine and Roses, a world-class hotel and spa, is the centerpiece of Lodi's accommodation choices. Other comfortable local lodging establishments include the Amorosa Inn and Gardens and The Inn at Locke House in nearby Lockeford.

The 100-year-old Wine and Roses has hosted famous guests from Margaret Thatcher to Martha Stewart. The charming historic rooms are still available, complete with big cozy beds and radiators. Two additional wings bring the hotel's room total to 47.

Rooms in the garden wing have a Mediterranean feel, with Italian leather furniture and private balconies overlooking the gardens. Rooms in the spa wing have a modern, spa-inspired decor.

"We have a hotel room to suit any taste," Spa Director Sheila Newfield said.

The 56,000-square-foot spa, which has been open for the past year, pampers guests with nearly any treatment imaginable. A staff of 25 caters to one's every need.

Guests start out with a steam shower, then relax in the tranquility room eating homemade granola and fruit by a fireplace.

A soak in the hot and cold plunge pools next to a waterfall and outdoor fire pit will have guests in the mood for an unforgettable treatment in one of seven private massage rooms. Besides different massage treatments, facials and body wraps, the spa has a full beauty salon offering manicures, pedicures and hair styling.

Newfield said one would have to drive 100 miles to Napa to find a spa of this class.

"It's a unique environment because it is a resort spa in a boutique hotel," she said. "This is a place to come when you need to get away. You are in for a tranquil experience. Once those doors close behind you and you shed your business attire, you get to check out by checking in."

A Wine and Roses experience is complete only after a gourmet meal in the restaurant with a glass of Lodi wine, or a champagne brunch in the banquet room.

On the edge of Lodi's wine country, the quaint Amorosa Inn and Gardens is like staying at a friend's house.

The four-room bed and breakfast is owned by local winemakers Mike and Renae Matson and has been open since 2002.

"I really wanted to give guests a sense of how wonderful living in Lodi is," Renae Matson said. "Everything that's happening in Lodi is making Lodi sparkle, and I hope to add to that sparkle."

Most of the cozy rooms have private patios and fireplaces. A stay at the inn includes local wine and homemade breakfast.

Just east of Lodi in the quiet town of Lockeford, the Inn at Locke House is set on a bluff in the charming countryside.

Guests can choose from four Victorian-style rooms or reserve the private water tower suite.

This romantic three-room suite includes a fireplace and a offers superb view of the surrounding nature.

The house is 150 years old and is decorated with items of historical significance and antiques from Dean Jewett Locke, who built the farmhouse in 1855.

Room rates include breakfast, beverages and the cookie of the day.
