Spaans Cookie Co. is a family business that has been a fixture in Galt for more than a century. Though the company has modernized over the years, it continues to carry on some of its founding traditions.
The cookies are sold throughout the U.S. and are available in grocery stores, but you can get the newest flavors and a bigger variety at the company store in Galt. There are also plenty of other items in the light, friendly shop, such as cookie jars and gifts, candy and pastries.
Spaans has more than 40 varieties in its store, including many that are sugar-free, said Melissa Thompson, vice president of the company. The sugar-free cookies are among the most popular.
"Our sugar free cookies are popular because they really do taste good," she said. "Some of these recipes were developed 12-plus years ago, so we have had lots of time to perfect each flavor."
New flavors come from customer or industry suggestions. New products come out in the company store first, so that they can get feedback from the store's regular customers.
"We constantly are experimenting with new product lines," she said, adding that the newest items include seasonal bulk products for in service bakeries including the patriotic line and cut-out bear cookies.
Some items are made from the original recipes, including Spiced Windmill and Parker House Rolls.
Another new thing is cutting down on hydrogenated shortening in cookies.
"People have looked for a more healthy cookie," she said.
