Lodi resident Dick Hurych has a list of favorite jazz destinations. There's the Monterey Jazz Festival, Pearl's Jazz Club in San Francisco and Hutchins Street Square in Lodi.
Hutchins Street Square?"Yes. And that doesn't run a distant second," said Hurych, who has attended the Night Time Live jazz concerts for the past 13 years.
Forget rock, rap or hip-hop. They don't hold a candle to jazz in Lodi. With concerts ranging from Dixieland to zydeco, bebop to smooth jazz, Lodi is proving to be a hot spot for jazz lovers.
Marlo Kerner, producer of the Night Time Live jazz series, gets more calls these days from musicians than he has available show dates.
The series initially began 14 years ago in the Thomas Theatre Gallery, which had a capacity of about 100. It soon outgrew the space and was moved to Kirst Hall, where over 300 people routinely gather for jazz concerts, Kerner said.
"My mission was to develop an audience for jazz and modern music and create a comfortable place for musicians to perform to an appreciative audience," Kerner said. "We've accomplished that with this series."
Internationally acclaimed jazz accordionist Art Van Damme has been a repeat performer in Lodi.
"It's one of the nicer places to do a concert," said Van Damme, 85, who lives in Roseville.
Sacramento jazz musician Jim Martinez, 40, has been playing in Lodi for more than 10 years.
"Lodi might be more of a jazz (mecca) than Sacramento," Martinez said. "Jazz is dying everywhere due to lack of organization and support but (not in Lodi)."
Lodi has also proven to be a great launching pad for jazz musicians.
Smooth jazz artist Travis Vega, 24, launched his career performing at venues including the Lodi Farmer's Market and Field of Beans Coffeehouse.
