Simply the best of Lodi

From music to art, Lodi has many cultural events for the entertainment enthusiast

No, you won't find Creedence Clearwater Revival here, but Lodi has an interesting arts and entertainment scene to get stuck in.

Jazz fans will enjoy the annual Night Time Live jazz series, which runs from January to March at Hutchins Street Square (125 S. Hutchins St., 333-5550, http://www.hutchinsstreetsquare.com). Dixieland, zydeco, bebop and smooth jazz are just a sampling of what you'll find with some regional favorites and national rising stars. In previous years, the lineup has included internationally acclaimed jazz accordionist Art Van Damme, jazz organist Delbert Bump and the swinging sounds of Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. All this in a casual, cabaret-style setting with great acoustics.

If it's blues that fuels you, Jessie's Grove Winery (1973 W. Turner Road, 368-0880, http://www.jgwinery.com) has your ticket, with a summer's worth of outdoor concerts. This year's calendar features guitar blues from the Shane Dwight Band, dance blues, rockabilly and R&B from the Rhythm Doctors and Chicago, down-home and Louisiana blues from Deja Blues. Bring a picnic, pop a bottle of Jessie's Grove wine and kick back in the old oak grove.

But Jessie's Grove isn't the only Lodi winery hosting live entertainment. Borra Winery (1301 E. Armstrong Road, 368-2446, http://www.borravineyards.com) kicks off a year of exciting events, ranging from winemaker dinners to spa days. They also host Fusion Friday, the second Friday of every month, pairing light appetizers from the area's top restaurants with their own line of wines.

Speaking of Fridays, the First Friday Art Hop, which happens the first Friday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m., is a nice introduction to Lodi's burgeoning arts scene. Venues including restaurants, galleries and studios host different local and area artists each month and the shows range from photography to sculpture.

Hutchins Street Square (125 S. Hutchins St., 333-5511), Lodi Art Center (110 S. Church St. 333-3855), Knowlton Gallery (115 S. School St., #14, 368-5123), California Street Cafe (322 N. California St., 367-1780), Scooters (121 W. Elm St., 369-8100), Studio 531 (531 N. Hutchins St., 570-5963) and the Lodi Public Library (201 W. Locust St., 333-5566) are just a few venues that routinely open their doors each month. Oh, and did I mention that many venues also host live music, free snacks and wine? It might be the best free event Lodi has to offer.
