Wedding photography has evolved so much in the past few years. Not only has the equipment photographers use become more elaborate, but what they can offer their clients has as well. Some photography studios also offer the option to record your wedding day as a cinematic masterpiece.

Some studios continue in the traditional means of photography — film. Some do mainly portraits. Others record the day as a journalist or lifestyle photographer would. Whatever style you choose, here are some tips to make sure you get the right photographer for you.

1. Referrals from friends and family is one way to get the ball rolling. If they absolutely love the images captured, set up an appointment to meet the photographer. If they didn’t so much, or you have seen the images and maybe feel they are not your style, you can move on.

2. Products offered by the photographer can be a big deciding factor. Do you want the traditional album, or a book? Maybe you want the digital negatives? Do you want a large canvas print, or just gift prints? Ask what they offer.

3. Ask to see the photographers portfolio or check out their work on their website and/or blog. Get a feel for their work.

4. You can “tryout” a photographer with an engagement session. Some include the session when booking a wedding. It is a good ice-breaker and way to get an idea of how you all work together.

5. Make the most of your time with the photographer. Don’t spend lots of time checking into hotels or picking up kegs for the reception. Get people outside the wedding party to do this. It is important to give them a schedule of the events so they can better capture your day. This is where a wedding planner may be a great idea.

6. Be sure to give your photographer your must-have portraits list with names of people you want in the shot. This saves time, and you get what you want.

7. If your are nervous before taking portraits, it’s OK to have drink before to loosen up those nerves. It’s not everyday you are followed by paparazzi.

8. A lot of reception sites are now asking that the photographer carry liability insurance. Is yours insured?
