September is here, and along with it comes fall fruit and vegetables and the Grape Festival.
The thought of the Grape Festival brings fair food to the front of everyone’s minds. Have you ever thought about infusing fair food with grapes? That’s happening this year as each food vendor includes a grape-based food item on their menus this year.
Mark Armstrong, Grape Festival CEO, said the idea was born during the festival planning stage as a way to bring more people to the festival.
“We all felt you could get wine at the festival, but it wasn’t possible to get anything ‘grape’ to eat or drink,” he said.
Of course, you can still find the staple fair food this year such as Lockeford Sausage’s Smoked Dakota bratwurst. But if you’d also like to try a meal with grapes, head over to A Moveable Feast, where you can find a grilled chicken and cheese sandwich with grapes in the middle.
“We wanted a sandwich, because that’s what we sell, and the chicken is the most popular seller,” said Doug Seed, owner of A Moveable Feast.
Adding the cheese to the chicken and grapes blended the whole thing together, he said. The local food vendor will also have his regular menu, including fries with dipping sauces, cajun shrimp, black bean and salmon burgers and steak sandwiches.
If you need to quench your thirst while out under the sun, Sierra Kettle Corn will be featuring a Grape Nehi, old-fashioned grape soda.
When you are ready for dessert, head over to Funnel Cake Express, where you will find a peanut butter and jelly funnel cake. The cake will be sprinkled with powered sugar and will have whipped cream on top.
“We already offer peanut butter, so it was just the next step,” said Lorrie Sutton.
If cupcakes are more your thing, step over to The Cupcake Lady. They will be infusing their best seller, maple bacon cupcake, with a tawny Port wine.
“The nutty quality adds a special dimension to this cupcake,” said Steve Fraga of the Cupcake Lady.
They will also be preparing a divine chocolate-Merlot as well. Fraga said they have prepared both cupcakes at special events before.
“We have a myriad of cupcake recipes which call for the use of wonderful wines, and these are two of our favorites,” he said.
