Harvesting the bounty: Historic images of Lodi agriculture
Farmers continued trying other crops and methods in the early 1900s. This 1924 photograph shows a demonstration of a new potato harvester pulled by horses through the thick peat soil west of Lodi. The machine cut through the plants and soil to unearth the potatoes, which were thrown up onto a conveyor belt and dropped behind the machine on top of the ground. Workers then followed the machine to pick up the potatoes and put them in large sacks.
