Harvesting the bounty: Historic images of Lodi agriculture

While much of the Lodi grape crop of Tokays was picked and sold as fresh fruit in the early 1900s, the wine industry grew rapidly at the same time. Lodi’s first winery was built in 1900, and others followed quickly. This circa-1915 photograph shows the flurry of harvest activity with many wagons waiting to unload grapes at the Community Winery at the north end of Sacramento Street near the Mokelumne River. The River Pointe housing subdivision now is located in this spot.
