Four health checks every woman must do - for herself and those she loves
Updated: May 20, 2013 - 1:32 am

(BPT) - American women spend more time taking care of their families, homes and jobs than themselves. With so much time invested in caring for others, women can overlook the importance of their own health. Yet, neglecting their own health needs can make it much harder for women to also take care of those they love.

Protecting your paycheck - for today and tomorrow
Updated: May 17, 2013 - 1:32 am

(BPT) - People insure their homes, their cars and even their vacations without giving it a second thought. But many do not think about insuring their most important asset – their income – from a disability caused by illness or injury. And it’s not just income during working years that is at risk. A disability can also put a serious dent in your ability to enjoy retirement.

Surprising ways older drivers can stay safer on the road
Updated: May 09, 2013 - 1:33 am

(BPT) - For baby boomers and beyond, a lot has changed since they first received their drivers’ license, from car technology and traffic rules, to even road conditions. Many older drivers are taking a proactive approach to staying safe on the road. Most wear a seat belt – 77 percent of drivers age 65 and older according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – and most obey the speed limit and avoid the road when conditions are bad. But a few surprising steps can help older drivers stay even safer.

DIY for your IRA: What you should know about self-directing
Updated: May 08, 2013 - 1:34 am

Ups and downs in the current market and recent corporate and banking scandals have prompted many people to seek ways to have more control over their retirement funds. Welcome

With good planning, regular exercise and some luck many of us can look forward to an active and leisurely retirement. But our annual Sentinel Silver Directory also helps seniors face the sad truth that health issues haunt us as we age.

Like many sons and daughters of the World War II generation, I've been able to rely on my parents' strength and good health until recently. Late in 2012, my mother's health took a turn for the worse and Dad has had to reach out to professional caregivers as well as to me and my wife.

As we navigated the complications of hospital and elder care, I relied on the advice and services of caring professionals who guided us all through uncharted waters. Mom now has good care and Christi and I are helping Dad face the challenges ahead.

Suddenly the information in Sentinel Silver is no longer for someone else. And I'm more impressed than ever by the usefulness of this publication that our staff presents every year for caregivers and active seniors in the Lodi area and San Joaquin County.

If you're like me, you'll keep Sentinel Silver handy. It can go in drawer awaiting an emergency. But I plan to keep this edition on the coffee table where it will inspire suggestions and help me find answers when my parents need me and Christi.

Wishing you and your parents health and strength in 2013

Marty Weybret, publisher
